History of Crooked Island
The islands existed in virtual obscurity until 1783, when American Loyalists began to settle here. These former plantation owners brought slaves and money to start a short-lived cotton industry. By the beginning of the 19th Century Crooked Island was home to more than 40 plantations employing 1200 slaves. The population turned to sponge diving for a short time when cotton growing became uneconomical due to Emancipation and soil depletion. The remains of plantation sites such as Good Hope House, Marine Farms Plantation, Seaview Plantation and Prospect Plantation are still evident. The first Post Office in The Bahamas was established at Pittstown Point in the late 1700’s.

New U.S. Passport Regulations
As of January 23, 2007 all U.S. citizens are required to carry valid U.S. passports when traveling to and from The Bahamas.
